Vidya Devi is a 50 year old Dalit woman who lives in the Sattiwala village of Rampur in Uttar Pradesh. Her family belongs to the Chamhaar community which is primarily made up of shoemakers and leather workers. This outcaste community can barely survive with the income they bring in.

The recent flash flood in the Sitamarhi district of Bihar has made deep and unrecoverable wounds in the lives of Kailash, his wife, and three daughters. Kailash (45 years old) from the village of Bhanaspati was making his living by going door-to-door collecting scraps and selling them to a middlemen. Life was difficult with his little earnings but, somehow he provided for the basic needs of his family. The flash flood took all that away. It damaged not only the house but also washed away his 12 year old son Sonu Kumar. The whole family was deeply traumatized. They had no money to pay to the divers that looked for their son or to conduct the funeral of the dead child.
Gauramma Benure’s Story – A Goat’s Tale
Mrs. Gauramma Benure was from a poor family. At 18, she married Mr. Mahadevappa, a daily wager. During their marriage, they were blessed with 5 boys and 1 girl. Eventually, she started to work in order to meet the needs of the family. In 2005, at the age of 45, she lost her husband which was devastating. She would never be able to earn enough money for the family to live and also save money for her children’s future, especially to prepare for her daughter’s marriage (parents of girls need to pay a price in money and jewelry to the groom’s family).

Because she married at a young age she was not able to continue her education although she very much wanted to. She always had a desire to do something to help support her husband and family but never had the opportunity.
