Gauramma Benure’s Story – A Goat’s Tale

Mrs. Gauramma Benure was from a poor family. At 18, she married Mr. Mahadevappa, a daily wager. During their marriage, they were blessed with 5 boys and 1 girl. Eventually, she started to work in order to meet the needs of the family. In 2005, at the age of 45, she lost her husband which was devastating. She would never be able to earn enough money for the family to live and also save money for her children’s future, especially to prepare for her daughter’s marriage (parents of girls need to pay a price in money and jewelry to the groom’s family).

In 2006, she came in contact with a Covenant Social Services (the development arm of HCC) staff member and expressed interest in understanding more about Self Help Groups. She took active participation in all the training programs. In April 2006, CSS provided her with a goat. Now she has 8 goats and earns an income of 10,000 rupees per year which she is using to save for her children’s future and her daughter’s marriage.
