Kailash’s Story – the Flash Floods in Bihar Required a Flash Response
The recent flash flood in the Sitamarhi district of Bihar has made deep and unrecoverable wounds in the lives of Kailash, his wife, and three daughters. Kailash (45 years old) from the village of Bhanaspati was making his living by going door-to-door collecting scraps and selling them to a middlemen. Life was difficult with his little earnings but, somehow he provided for the basic needs of his family. The flash flood took all that away. It damaged not only the house but also washed away his 12 year old son Sonu Kumar. The whole family was deeply traumatized. They had no money to pay to the divers that looked for their son or to conduct the funeral of the dead child.
CSS staff were able to help this family and pay for some of the expenses that this family had. They also helped him register a FIR at the local police station. He and his family were also among the beneficiaries who received cooked food through one of the community kitchens organized by CSS. They were also provided counseling to help them cope with their tremendous loss. His family members received treatment through the medical camp organized in the village. He is thankful to the CSS team for their support in his time of need. He also expresses his desire to help those in whatever way possible who were also victimized by the flood.
